Hawkesbury Regional Gallery and Hawkesbury Regional Museum are looking forward to a big year in 2018 following a successful grant application to Create NSW, the NSW Government’s Arts and Cultural Development Program.

According to Gallery and Museum Director, Kathleen von Witt, Gallery exhibitions supported by the grant include three in-house exhibitions, as well as the touring exhibitions ‘Clay Intersections’, from the Australian Design Centre, and ‘Art Express’, the popular exhibition toured by the NSW Department of Education and showcasing the work of outstanding HSC students.

There will also be a photographic exhibition bringing together iconic artists and artworks of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries including Max Dupain, Olive Cotton, Jeff Carter, Roger Scott and Trent Parke. Also facilitated by the grant are a variety of workshops for adults and children, including school holiday activities and Art After School X 4.

For its part, the Museum will open two new exhibitions, the first exploring the rich heritage of market gardens of the Hawkesbury, incorporating objects from the Museum's collection and sourced from the community, and the second looking at the early outlaws of the Hawkesbury, from the infamous Captain Thunderbolt and Bold Jack Donahue to the misguided convicts who tried to flee across the river and over the mountains to China.

In 2018 the museum will also reinterpret two upstairs rooms in Howe House, the historic building which is part of the museum, recreating the bedrooms of an adult and child living in the Georgian period. This will allow access to the top floor of the house to the public for the first time since 2007.

‘We are very encouraged by the success of our grant application,’ said Kath. ‘It means that we can maintain the high standards we have established for both venues, and offer visitors some terrific new exhibitions and experiences in the year ahead’.
