Old Dubbo Gaol
This state heritage building operated for 119 years, from 1847 to 1966, and is now a popular place to see history brought to fascinating life. The old gaol serves as a reminder of the darker moments of Australia’s past with open cells and the hangman’s kit and gloves on display.
For an especially spooky treat, take your family on the interactive Twilight Tour where the warden will demonstrate the reality of what it was like to be a prisoner in days gone by. The family-friendly tour operates during NSW school holidays and long weekends. It’s not all gloom and doom, though, as there are plenty of fun activities to entertain the kids, particularly during school holidays, with characters in costume and kids’ tours joining the programme.
Don’t forget to witness the bird’s- eye view of the gaol from the top of the watch tower; with visitors teeming like ants below, you will feel as though you are on top of the world.
