“You can’t go past the mid-century look to create a plain and simple yet stylish and inviting dining space.”

THE NEW MID-CENTURY

space is light and bright with lots of white and stylish contemporary accents that bring it up to date. Here’s how stylist Jackie Brown put together this gorgeous look. STEP ONE The dining setting is the obvious place to start. A two-tone suite in a retro style combining a natural, lighttoned timber in the legs and plain white seats and table top is the perfect starting point. Look for interesting curves and softer rounded edges. STEP TWO A sideboard is a must when it comes to the mid-century look. Choose something that isn’t too heavy – white cabinet doors will lighten the look of dark timber and complement your dining set. The legs are the giveaway when it comes to retro style; make sure your sideboard sits off the ground on tapered or angled legs.

STEP THREE A throwback that’s a must have is the statement pendant light. Think bold and sculptural – pick something with a striking design and strong silhouette and use it to anchor your dining table within the space. STEP FOUR Keep to simple accessories to maintain a sophisticated look – try a touch of brass combined with white or neutral-coloured rugs, wall art, trays and vases.
