Cherie Barber makes a dreary outdoor area attractive, versatile and useful.

AN ENTICING BALCONY or courtyard is like a whole extra room to enjoy all year round. Why settle for something bland and boring when you can create a resort-style oasis on a budget? This half-day makeover relied mainly on paint, plants and an ingenious DIY decking system to turn a bleak slab of concrete into a gorgeous outdoor room.

MAKING THE CHANGES

Step one of the makeover was to thoroughly clean the whole area, then give the walls a coat of a muted grey, all-weather paint. Then it was ready for the biggest change: creating a new floor with the Good Times modular decking system (Goodtimesdecking.com). This DIY system doesn’t require any holes or footings, as the framing is laid directly over the existing surface. So it’s ideally suited to rental properties, too, as it can be simply packed up and taken away with you.

For this makeover, the modular decking system served more than one purpose. I used it to provide muchneeded privacy screening at either end of the courtyard. It was also used in the construction of a comfy day bed.

To enhance the warm timber tones, lashings of greenery were then added.

I used the Holman Greenwall Vertical Garden kit from Bunnings to create a wall herb garden. This is both a practical and visually appealing solution on what I call the “strategic focal point”: the wall the owners face as soon as they step outside the house.

DRESS IT UP

A piece of wall art purchased from Bunnings, spray-painted silver and centrally positioned, further enhances this wall. Either side, creating perfect symmetry, is a trio of planted pots and vertical garden. Plenty of colourful cushions, potted colour, a couple of quirky birds and the owner’s original table and chairs complete this useful and enchanting outdoor room.

Bland to beautiful Now a private outdoor room, the courtyard is perfect for entertaining. Room for improvement The original space was grey and uninviting.

Instant appeal

Timber and greenery are a welcoming combination.

Open to all

The existing brick wall provided little screening from neighbours. Zoned for living Focal point Oversize pots and a vertical garden face the house. The new-look space provides areas for eating and relaxing.
