Men­tal health is an is­sue at any age. Un­der­stand­ing and iden­ti­fy­ing the symp­toms of anx­i­ety and de­pres­sion is im­por­tant, par­tic­u­larly when your body is go­ing through hor­monal changes, such as pu­berty, preg­nancy, af­ter birth and be­fore, dur­ing and af­ter menopause. If you’re ex­pe­ri­enc­ing signs of an­te­na­tal or post­na­tal de­pres­sion, you can talk it through with your mid­wife, early child­hood nurse or GP. And if you have a ten­dency to feel anx­ious, iso­lated or de­pressed, don’t keep it to your­self. Your doc­tor can re­fer you to a spe­cial­ist or you can con­tact or­gan­i­sa­tions that spe­cialise in men­tal health, such as Be­yond Blue (Beyond­blue.org.au) and com­mu­nity health cen­tres in your cap­i­tal city or re­gional area for ad­vice and re­fer­rals.
