James’s guide to getting your garage organised.

STORAGE IS ONE of the most important considerations these days. We tend to have more stuff than ever and our lives are busy, so utilising every part of our homes makes sense. If you have one, a garage is an important space, not only to park your car but also to store those extra items you don’t have room for inside your home. Here are some tips for making the most of the garage space you have.

1 STOW IT OR THROW IT!

The first step is to look at what items should stay and which should go. We’re all guilty of hanging onto items we move from one place to another, sometimes

2 GO UP, NOT OUT

for years, when they should have been recycled, thrown out or given to someone who can use them. Let go of things you don’t need before this happens. Maybe a garage sale is worth your time. What you don’t sell, take to a charity shop, then everyone wins.

Most garages are one or maybe two cars wide, so this means you only have a small amount of space on either side of the car to get in and out, as well as easily past it. By going up and hanging items on the walls – or better, installing shelves up high – you can use this often-wasted space.

Happy place Garages are often dark, so bright colours work well.
