You will need Belt sander; tape measure; masking tape; water-based dark wood stain; water-based clear satin wood finish

STEP ONE Sand your timber flooring with the belt sander, then measure and mark out a border around the edges of the room – it’s up to you how wide you want it to be – and measure and mark out your diamond pattern on the flooring.

STEP TWO Using masking tape, section off the border first and apply the dark stain to your border. You will need to use about three coats. Leave to dry.

STEP THREE Tape up the edges of your pattern and apply three coats of the dark stain to each diamond.

STEP FOUR Once all the stain is dry, strip off tape and apply three coats of clear wood finish to the entire floor. Leave to dry. You’ll need to set aside two days for this project.
