GARDEN ADVICE

Homes+ (Australia) - - MY BACKYARD -

WEEK 1

Trim off old azalea blooms after flowering. This encourages spot flowering, healthy bushy growth and limits petal blight disease.

WEEK 2

Let bulbs die down naturally (don’t cut off brown foliage) and feed now to boost next year’s blooms. Plant summer bulbs like liliums, belladonnas and hippeastrums.

WEEK 3

Plant petunias, salvias, begonias and phlox now for flowers in 6–8 weeks – and until after Christmas if you trim blooms as they fade.

WEEK 4

Prepare lawns for lush summer growth: use a slow release, lawnspecific fertiliser, aerate with spiky lawn aerating shoes – or hire a machine – and water well.
