“Our home is full of colour and sunshine.”

Stephanie and Julian could see the potential of the character-filled Queenslander-style home, which was in desperate need of an update.

with the warm feel of this 110-year-old cottage. We liked both the raised Queenslanderstyle that I grew up with in Brisbane, combined with the fireplaces, high ceilings and old-time character of London, where we’d lived for five years.

A quick revamp

The house had great bones, but needed some immediate love. So for three weeks before we moved in, we painted the entire interior and exterior, replaced all the floorboards and laid a new deck out the front. Then, after a year of living here, we renovated the master bathroom and ensuite. They needed modernising and refreshing but it was important to us that they retained the older style of the house.

When decorating, I tend to go on gut instinct and fill rooms with what makes me happy, rather than what is practical. I was brought up on a wild palette of colour which forms the backbone of my style. Our home is full of bright colour and sunshine – it’s very Australian, open and breezy. We spend a lot of time outside on the deck with our babies as it’s a great, safe place.

In future we’d like to jazz up the kitchen, which is very roomy but needs updating. Our home is perfect for now, although as our babies grow up we may need to look at how we maximise our outdoor space.”

In and out With servery windows opening out from the kitchen, the deck is a much-used space. The colourful stools came from Matt Blatt.
