Designers James, Kara and Kyal revamp this muchused living room to suit a busy family of five
Three designers from The Living Room revamp a living area to suit a family of five.
LIKE MANY COUPLES with young kids, Janet and Phil Hayes have always put their family first, and decorating their home has been low on the list of priorities – until now. Enter The Living Room’s makeover guru Baz Du Bois, who has challenged designers James Treble and reno power couple Kyal and Kara to turn the Hayes’s living room into something beautiful and practical.
COASTAL VS COUNTRY
Since purchasing their house in 2007, Janet and Phil simply haven’t had the time to put their own stamp on the place. In particular, their large, openplan kitchen, living and dining room is looking tired and cluttered with a mix of different furniture styles that they have had for years or found on the side of the road. With three boys in the house, Janet and Phil have always held off on buying any new furniture, but now the kids are a bit older, it’s time to make the living space more inviting and comfortable for this family of five.
Baz has given both teams a theme. James has to create a “coastal” room design and Kyal and Kara a “country” look. Each team must adopt a different layout and they must build a practical DIY feature that incorporates extra storage space, which also has to be consistent with their assigned themes.
James immediately comes up with a plan to freshen up Janet and Phil’s space by bringing the outdoors in using natural timber pieces and lighter, brighter furniture. He also decides to flip the layout to make it more practical for entertaining.
TEAM KARA & KYAL
Kyal and Kara decide on a French provincial take on a country look and they draw inspiration from some of the items already in the room that provide soul and personality.
The teams will head to Temple & Webster for furniture and styling pieces and Bunnings for DIY materials.
