ECLECTIC

Personal relics and a creative touch make this family home come to life.

Jelena Anderson has used her creative touch to inject some vibrant personality into her colourful family home.

“WE WERE LIVING IN A SMALL UNIT when our second child arrived and, while we loved our unit and probably could have survived with two little boys, we knew a move was inevitable at some point (read: boys!). Keen to stay in the same area, with its proximity to the bush, good schools, parks and close to our family and friends, we found our four-bedroom home that had been renovated extensively by the previous owners about seven years before.

FLOORED IT

Despite it being renovated, we were still keen to make a few changes and set about removing carpets from the boys’ bedroom (I struggle with the thought of carpet and kids’ mess!), and updating the flooring throughout. We wanted to refresh the interior and install underfloor heating and replace the existing cherry-coloured hardwood for more hardwearing laminate. The oak colour we chose hides dirt, dust and mess like you wouldn’t believe. As the kids are getting older and using their rooms differently, and we also entertain more, Darren and I are always talking about how we can improve the look and feel of our space.

HAPPY HOME

I’d describe the style of our home as eclectic, evolving, unpretentious, casual, warm and happy. I like to get a sense of how we use a room before decorating, taking into account the all-important light factor. I take a lot of inspiration from homewares magazines and Instagram – there are so many talented interior stylists, designers and homewares retailers.

I really enjoy mixing things up a bit and moving things around to change the mood – a simple furniture reshuffle can see the boys choosing to play board games more often (because I switched coffee tables around) or huddling together with a good story (because the sofa is basking in the afternoon sun). For us, home is dynamic, interesting and a whole lot of fun.”

One of a kind

Jelena painted the unique artwork above the sofa for her son Ruben’s first birthday.

Pitter-patter proof Oak laminate has been installed throughout for practicality.

DETAIL Hot pots Mexican Talavera pots are a vibrant addition in the yard.
