Cut blooms don’t have to cost a fortune, particularly if you go for longer-lasting flowers. Think orchid sprays, lilies in bud, arums and natives like waratahs or South African proteas.

For maximum impact, stick to one colour in a display. For example, white with more white: roses, white dahlias and Queen Anne’s lace always look fresh. Recut the stems and change the water every four days to significantly extend their vase life. And don’t forget leaves. A single bunch of gum and nuts or stunning coloured foliage, such as gold and red crotons, lasts weeks.

Alternatively, you can create a display of small succulents, which are reasonably priced and will last for weeks or even months.
