Super stylist Fiona works her makeover magic on a dual-purpose living room.

THIS LARGE REAR ROOM in the Gladesville, Sydney, home of young parents Sarah and Michael, doubles as a family living room and play area for their son Patrick, 20 months. Although they are becoming more confident decorators, the couple weren’t sure how to make the space more interesting or sort out storage for Patrick’s toys.

“The room lacked a few things to complete it, especially the play area,” says Sarah. “Although we wanted to make sure Patrick had his own space, it was becoming overcrowded and messy.” To suit the rest of the house, Fiona worked on a Scandinavian/ vintage/retro feel, using colours to go with the lounge (which was a wedding gift), floor rug and chair.

THE VERDICT

The couple are more than happy with their makeover. “Fiona helped combine the two spaces so they flow and fit together,” says Sarah. “She also added in those little extras that make the room feel more homely, like the side tables and lamp, and made use of a patterned throw we already had.”

Sarah is particularly impressed with how Fiona chose items other than framed pictures to break the big white wall, like the plant, the custom-made macrame wall-hanging and the lamp. “I’d never have thought of the wallhanging – but I love it! And it’s unique.”

The family’s favourite piece is the toy box. “Within seconds we can throw all the toys in there to transform the space from playland to tidy living space for everyone to enjoy,” says Sarah.
