Our Super Stylist, Fiona Michelon, works her magic on a teenager’s bedroom.

THIS ROOM BELONGS TO 14-yearold Brydee, who spends every second weekend and her school holidays here with father Chris and step-mum Tracey. When Chris and Tracey became engaged last year, rather than move house they decided to renovate Tracey’s two-bedroom suburban home, where she had been living with her 13-year-old daughter Renee. “We ran out of money and Brydee was the only member of the family who missed out on a brand-new room in the renovations,” says Tracey.

Fiona’s brief was to style Brydee’s bedroom with warmth and a teenage vibe. “We wanted to create something more grown-up for her,” says Tracey.

Keeping in mind Brydee’s favourite colour combo of purple and orange, Fiona added warmth to the space with cushions in different textures, a pop of velvet and mohair, layered woven jute and soft faux sheepskin rugs, and pieces with timber tones.

“I kept the furniture and bedding neutral so that Brydee can easily change up the accessories as she grows up,” says Fiona.

The bed had a quality wooden base but needed a fresh new look, which Fiona achieved with a linen-upholstered bedhead and an inexpensive ribbed valance. To make the room feel bigger, she added a large mirror – a must-have in any teen girl’s room – and gave the wall personality with a playful artwork that’s not too young, so Brydee won’t grow out of it quickly.

Brydee loves her new-look bedroom, especially the way the bed has been dressed. “She didn’t want to sleep in it the first night, as she didn’t want to mess it up!” says Tracey. Brydee’s favourite item is the leaning mirror, while Tracey says she never would have thought of adding a bedhead.
