Dur­ing this reno Barry was faced with an un­ex­pected chal­lenge: an old chim­ney and fire­place, which had to stay in situ. It was lo­cated in the new din­ing zone so he turned it into a stor­age and dis­play nook. For sta­bil­ity, he in­stalled a lin­tel, then framed the space and clad it in plas­ter­board. A piece of old ore­gon sal­vaged from the de­mo­li­tion was sanded back and coated in tung oil, then used for the shelv­ing. Re­sult: an at­trac­tive fea­ture with a touch of his­tory!
