Jamie Durie trans­forms a stark sub­ur­ban yard into a thriv­ing food gar­den and en­ter­tain­ing area.

A stark back­yard be­comes a food bowl!

AF­TER LIV­ING IN LON­DON for many years and work­ing on sus­tain­abil­ity and con­ser­va­tion projects around the world, Kim and Mark fi­nally set­tled west of Syd­ney in a newly built house on Mark’s fam­ily’s land which had been sub­di­vided. When the now-en­gaged cou­ple set up home in 2015, the yard was all but weeds and a bare fence­line – and it re­mained that way un­til Jamie and The Liv­ing Room team ar­rived. The pre­vi­ously ru­ral land had never had any kind of gar­den and was a true blank can­vas for Jamie to work with.

Jamie was given a clear brief for the makeover. “We re­ally like sus­tain­able liv­ing, so we’d like to come out in the gar­den and pick food to use,” Mark says. “We’d love to have our own fruit and ve­g­ies,” Kim adds, “and a place where we can en­ter­tain friends.”

Jamie’s plan met all their wishes and more – the “travel-nos­tal­gic” gar­den is de­signed to draw peo­ple into it, with paving steps lead­ing to a per­gola and din­ing area. An ar­ray of vegie, fruit and herb plants along­side screen­ing bushes for pri­vacy com­plete the look.

The back­yard is now a pro­duc­tive gar­den that will en­able Kim and Mark to live the sus­tain­able life­style they’ve wanted.
