A stark backyard becomes a food bowl!

AFTER LIVING IN LONDON for many years and working on sustainability and conservation projects around the world, Kim and Mark finally settled west of Sydney in a newly built house on Mark’s family’s land which had been subdivided. When the now-engaged couple set up home in 2015, the yard was all but weeds and a bare fenceline – and it remained that way until Jamie and The Living Room team arrived. The previously rural land had never had any kind of garden and was a true blank canvas for Jamie to work with.

Jamie was given a clear brief for the makeover. “We really like sustainable living, so we’d like to come out in the garden and pick food to use,” Mark says. “We’d love to have our own fruit and vegies,” Kim adds, “and a place where we can entertain friends.”

Jamie’s plan met all their wishes and more – the “travel-nostalgic” garden is designed to draw people into it, with paving steps leading to a pergola and dining area. An array of vegie, fruit and herb plants alongside screening bushes for privacy complete the look.

Potential, potential No garden had ever existed here, just weeds and boring fences. BEFORE

Lush oasis

The backyard is now a productive garden that will enable Kim and Mark to live the sustainable lifestyle they’ve wanted.
