The pergola was constructed using treated pine for the uprights, base and roof frames, Coolaroo shade cloth on top for sun protection and Ekodeck in Dark Brown for the decking. Ekodeck is made from more than 90 per cent reclaimed timber, bamboo and recycled plastic, which means it’s far less likely to split or warp and is resistant to termites, rot, decay, mould and mildew. “I’m all about not chopping down old-growth forests to have pretty decks,” Jamie says. “Ekodeck is a great product

– it has a wood grain and comes in a wide range of colours. You can sand it just like wood but there’s no painting or pre-finishing – just put it down and our forests are safe.”

The garden bed adjoining the entertainment zone is made from the Ridgi reinforced retaining wall system from Bunnings. This looks just like real timber but is actually made from concrete, so the sleepers are termite- and rot-resistant. Ekodeck laid on top of the retaining wall creates extra seating – handy when weeding.

Now the garden is complete with an entertaining area and a diverse range of fruit and veg, how does the couple feel? “It’s an oasis,” Kim says. “This garden has changed our lives. We are going to be outdoors a lot more. Now we will have food that we have grown ourselves, that we can take to our table and share with our family and friends.”

Mature banksia integrifolia and bottlebrush will provide privacy. Ekodeck in Dark Brown from Bunnings. Matador Artiste 4 burner BBQ with side wok burner. The pergola and fence are painted in Taubmans Monument.
