With a pool, pergola and deck area, this suburban backyard was well suited to family life. Owner Karen, who officiates at up to 40 weddings a year, thought it also had potential as an economical location for small ceremonies. But she felt it was in desperate need of a renovation. “The deck needs to have a better connection to the lawn, where the wedding guests would spill out, and I’d like a nice backdrop for photography after the ceremony – I can’t offer that at the moment,” Karen says.
The area also needs to function as Karen’s outdoor entertaining space all year round, but she felt it was disjointed from the house. Major issues were the pergola’s orientation to the pool, and the pool fence dividing the yard.
