Aus­tralian re­searchers are us­ing vir­tual re­al­ity to bol­ster con­ser­va­tion ef­forts by mak­ing it pos­si­ble to ‘visit’ trou­bled ar­eas with­out need­ing to ac­tu­ally phys­i­cally travel to them. Queens­land Univer­sity of Tech­nol­ogy and the Lupunaluz Foun­da­tion have put to­gether an Oc­cu­lus app that stitches to­gether a 360-de­gree ex­plorable sec­tion of the Ama­zon that can be used to demon­strate an area where the lo­cal jaguar pop­u­la­tion is un­der threat, which will help to pre­dict their move­ments and de­cide on con­ser­va­tion strate­gies.
