Tak­ing his child­hood love of the golden age of Amer­i­can il­lus­tra­tion into comics was al­ways his aim. An­drew Loomis, Nor­man Rock­well and ‘Dean of Il­lus­tra­tors’ Al Parker were in on it, and if some comic fans weren’t fa­mil­iar with their work, it didn’t lessen the im­pact of Alex’s art in Marvels, King­dom Come and Astro City. Yet in the pro­ceed­ing 20 years the artist has been hes­i­tant to bask in the lime­light, giv­ing few in­ter­views, talk­ing spar­ingly about his pas­sions and pro­cesses. “I can be very lo­qua­cious if I want to be,” he in­sists, “but I’ve of­ten found that the way I com­mu­ni­cate about stuff doesn’t of­ten trans­late to other peo­ple un­der­stand­ing
