Choose your workflow

There are many ways to start generating ideas. I like to experiment with different techniques and mediums. You can paint directly in Photoshop or start on paper with pencil, an ink pen or even watercolour. Each tool has its own personality, and chances are that their differences will help you create something new. Here I use Photoshop’s Smudge tool to sketch out my design.

For this workshop I’m starting from a 3D image that I made in Modo. The purpose of this starting plate is to give me colours and values to play with from the beginning. The details don’t matter because they’ll be destroyed with the Smudge tool, so to get started you can use random brushstrokes, a photo or even an earlier painting of yours.
