How Jef­frey Brown’s lighter al­ter­na­tive take on a range of Star Wars re­la­tion­ships be­came a New York Times best­seller and Eis­ner Award win­ner.

In 2012, Jef­frey Brown re­leased Darth Vader and Son, an adorable il­lus­trated story fea­tur­ing the Sith Lord and Luke Sky­walker. The book be­come a New York Times best­seller and a big win­ner at the Eis­ner Awards.

Jef­frey pub­lished Vader’s Lit­tle Princess in 2013, and Good­night Darth Vader in 2014. This year, Darth Vader and Friends fea­tures more of our favourite Star Wars char­ac­ters.

“The idea be­gan with think­ing on C-3PO and R2-D2 (with a work­ing ti­tle of LOLC3POR2D2BFF), and then I thought of all the other best friends I could write about, from Han and Chewie to Vader and the Em­peror,” says Jef­frey. “What I never an­tic­i­pated was how much kids would like the books, and ev­ery­one from hard­core Star Wars fans to peo­ple who never even saw the films,” he con­tin­ues.

Jef­frey’s found it tricky to find the right quotes and to not re­peat him­self. Drawing Star Wars ma­te­rial was one of Jef­frey’s dream jobs as a child. Jeal­ousy, birth­day par­ties, lightsaber bat­tles, shar­ing and re­bel­lion all fea­ture in the book.
