One treads lightly in the halls of the el­ven King Thin­gol and his queen Melian, es­pe­cially when you’re one of the only mor­tals to step foot there! Such was the dif­fi­culty I faced when com­mis­sioned to cre­ate a mas­sive work on the theme of Beren and Luthien, Tolkien’s love story from The Sil­mar­il­lion. My client was seek­ing an epic paint­ing, ap­prox­i­mately 3x2m, de­pict­ing the elvish court and the mo­ment Beren en­gages King Thin­gol in a dan­ger­ous tete-a-tete.

One of the most dif­fi­cult is­sues to ad­dress was how to bring forth enough il­lu­mi­na­tion in a court which is placed in a se­ries of caves. The na­ture of elves, their en­gage­ment with the for­est and na­ture, and the emo­tional mo­ment, called for a much brighter, airier land­scape. And this was just the start. From cos­tume de­sign to ar­chi­tec­tural con­sid­er­a­tions, colour bal­anc­ing to model ref­er­enc­ing, the var­i­ous lo­gis­ti­cal hur­dles to be man­aged be­gan to mount…
