Using the Path tool

ImagineFX: Sci-fi & Fantasy Art magazine - - Workshops -

I use the Path tool to create a fuel hose. With the Circle Selection tool I fill in a gradient and then draw a curve with the Path tool from the centre. I then set the Stroke path to Smudge and Photoshop automatically fills the line with light and shadow to look like a pipe. I then adjust the values and saturation to fit the environment.

Putting in those finishing touches

Lastly I add rim light, hose details and lights in the cockpit as well as on the building in the distance. When I know that I’m reaching the end of a painting, I tend to work messy. I merge layers, use Levels and add film grain to give the scene a cinematic look. And there we have it. Time to send it to the client!
