A game char­ac­ter may have lived a long life be­fore they even make it on to the player’s screen…

A lot of sketches, it­er­a­tions and re­search are done on char­ac­ters be­fore the public sees them. This un­for­tu­nately re­sults in plenty of re­jected de­signs. A lot of peo­ple and their vi­sions are in­volved in this process. Here are some early Elises from As­sas­sin’s Creed Unity.

The thumb­nails were cre­ated quickly to com­mu­ni­cate my in­ten­tions. I kept them sim­ple and went for read­abil­ity and clear and recog­nis­able shapes and forms. I shared this with the rest of the team be­fore go­ing fur­ther, to avoid wast­ing time on un­nec­es­sary ren­der­ing.

Main char­ac­ters of­ten change dur­ing the mak­ing of a game. Sce­nario, an­i­ma­tion, bud­gets and game­play all have an ef­fect, and if one changes dur­ing pro­duc­tion, the char­ac­ter of­ten changes with it. Elise needed to be soft­ened up a lit­tle bit to bet­ter fit her love story with Arno.
