Sep­a­rat­ing ma­te­ri­als

I start to block sep­a­rate ma­te­ri­als on sep­a­rate lay­ers, so that later I can eas­ily work on one el­e­ment at a time, and hide ar­eas us­ing masks. Then I set my sketch layer’s blend­ing mode to Color Burn, du­pli­cate it and add a Blur Fil­ter (10 per cent or so). This makes the colours of sketch lines much closer to the colours of ma­te­ri­als, and the blur­ring adds a soft shadow ef­fect.
