1 Be­gin with sil­hou­ettes, drawn small and quickly. The idea here is to not get bogged down with de­tail too early on. Just knock out as many as you can, as fast as you can. Then start cu­rat­ing the things you’ve come up with to see if they fit the list of ad­jec­tives you wrote down ear­lier.

2 Once you have some ideas, it’s time to pick out the ones that ap­peal to you the most and start flesh­ing them out. I gen­er­ally switch to a middle value and paint on top of the thumb­nail sil­hou­ettes, try­ing out dif­fer­ent smaller shapes in­side the large ones. Even­tu­ally I add lines.

3 Now fig­ure out a colour scheme. It helps to work in lay­ers for this part, be­cause then you can just ad­just the hue and sat­u­ra­tion eas­ily. Use colours for their value. Ul­tra­ma­rine is in­her­ently dark, so don’t put it next to a lot of yel­low or your new ad­dress will be in Con­trast City.
