Con­cept artists play an im­por­tant role in the de­vel­op­ment of video games. They’re the bridge be­tween the art di­rec­tor’s vi­sion of the game and the 3D artists who pro­duce the in-game as­sets. They’re re­spon­si­ble for mak­ing sure that the con­cept art tasks fol­low the des­ig­nated pro­duc­tion sched­ule; show­case the es­tab­lished de­sign pil­lars that have been es­tab­lished early on; and track down rel­e­vant pro­duc­tion in­for­ma­tion from other de­part­ments if this is miss­ing.

As a lead con­cept artist, my team and I face ex­cit­ing and fun chal­lenges ev­ery day. Not only do we need to em­brace the tech­nol­ogy changes within the dig­i­tal paint­ing process and learn new soft­ware, we’re also ex­pected to con­tin­u­ously grow as artists by prac­tis­ing tra­di­tional draw­ing and paint­ing.
