Donglu takes us through a typ­i­cal day for a lead con­cept artist

It’s 8am in the morn­ing, I walk into the of­fice, grab my coffee and read through my emails. Th­ese can vary in na­ture, from con­firm­ing the cur­rent dead­line of the con­cept art depart­ment tasks or pro­vid­ing paintovers for con­cept artists to re­ceiv­ing in-game screen­shot from the level artists for feed­back.

9:30am I kick off a meet­ing for a new map for the game.

10:30am Time to go through the photo ref­er­ences that my team have gath­ered, point­ing out the rel­e­vant de­sign el­e­ments to show­case.

11:30am I work on my own con­cept art as­sign­ments.

12pm I grab a quick lunch, check my af­ter­noon sched­ule, and pre­pare the ma­te­ri­als for meet­ings if needed.

1pm Time to lead a meet­ing to talk peo­ple through the pro­duc­tion sched­ule and dis­cuss how the tasks on the list im­pact each other.

2pm This is my daily re­view, where I as­sess the progress of my con­cept art team.

3pm I catch up with the pro­ject’s art di­rec­tor for our weekly catch-up. 4pm to 5pm I con­clude the day by work­ing on my own con­cept art tasks.
