Be­tween light and dark

For the shad­ing stage I paint a greyscale light­ing layer and add it to a layer group set to Mul­ti­ply. I then use the Gra­di­ent Map ad­just­ment layer to map the black and white to my light­ing colours. Here, it’s grey-pur­ple with a very sat­u­rated ter­mi­na­tor be­tween the light and dark. This setup makes it sig­nif­i­cantly eas­ier to change the colours of the im­age with­out hav­ing to re­paint any light­ing.
