Even to­day, when we think of Alice’s Ad­ven­tures in Won­der­land most artists tend to think of the world Arthur Rackham de­picted. Like many other artists, he vi­su­alised the sto­ries of the Broth­ers Grimm and Hans Chris­tian An­der­sen, but Alice fight­ing off a deck of liv­ing play­ing cards – ob­served by a mouse, a bird and a lizard – is a true clas­sic in chil­dren’s il­lus­tra­tion.
