The video games studio re­veals what kind of artist it’s on the look-out for. Could it be you?

If your dream is to work in game art, there are few greater prizes than a job at Bl­iz­zard En­ter­tain­ment. With its head­quar­ters in Irvine, Cal­i­for­nia, and stu­dios across Europe, Asia and the Amer­i­cas, the 25-year-old com­pany is home to the world’s big­gest MMORPG, World of War­craft. It’s also be­hind the best-selling Di­ablo and StarCraft se­ries, the on­line col­lectible card game Hearth­stone, the mul­ti­player first-per­son shooter Over­watch, the on­line bat­tle game He­roes of the Storm, and more be­sides.

In fact, Bl­iz­zard’s games are so iconic, and its artists so world-class (names like Lau­rel D Austin, Dan Scott and Arnold Tsang spring to mind), you might think you’re nowhere near good enough to work there.

How­ever, that might be a mis­take. As Ben Thomp­son, art direc­tor on Hearth­stone ex­plains, you may be a bet­ter fit than you think. “It’s a com­mon prob­lem that as artists, we don’t al­ways have the great­est of self­es­teem,” says Ben. “For ex­am­ple, I can’t tell you the num­ber of times we’ve ap­proached an artist and they’re sur­prised to find that they’re a can­di­date at all, that they could even be con­sid­ered.” Phill Gon­za­les, lead char­ac­ter artist on He­roes of the Storm, has ex­pe­ri­ence of this dis­join be­tween ta­lent and con­fi­dence. “I played Bl­iz­zard games at school, did a lot
