Securing your drawing

ImagineFX - - Traditional Artist -

Once your drawing is done, it’s good to make sure it’s secured so that when you paint it won’t dissolve or smear. I like to go over my drawings with India ink. It enables me to scrub in paint or wipe off paint, and not remove the drawing.

My go-to method is to use India ink and ink the most important lines of my drawing before erasing the rest. India ink is permanent and durable with vigorous painting. I’ve used Liquin to apply a colour wash directly over a drawing. If you don’t scrub hard with brushes, it’ll preserve your drawing underneath without the need for a fixative. Spray fixative is an easy way to make sure your drawing doesn’t bleed through or disappear when painting.
