“This means ‘be­come the wind’ in Ja­panese. I like the po­etic idea of be­com­ing some­thing else af­ter life; here, I wanted to de­pict some­one wit­ness­ing this mo­ment.”

“I started in black and white, paint­ing only the shad­ows. I com­bined tones us­ing the Smudge tool, and left the lighter ar­eas trans­par­ent. Then I painted light un­der­neath this shadow layer. I was pleased with how ev­ery­thing turned out.”

“Play­ing with Color Dy­nam­ics in Brush set­tings is an easy way to in­tro­duce va­ri­ety in an im­age’s hue and sat­u­ra­tion. It’s a good trick to make the colours vi­brate and add en­ergy to a paint­ing.”
