THE MAKING OF A LANDMARK: FOCAL ULTIMA 3-WAY COMPONENT SPEAKERS

InCar Entertainment  - - FEATURE -

What does a company at the leading edge of speaker technology do to push itself still further beyond? Come out guns blazing with an über design of course! Enter the recently released Ultima 3-way component set; a resounding statement of Focal’s engineering and manufacturing might.

Most likely the most expensive car audio speakers on the planet at $23,799 a set locally, the Ultima builds on the Utopia range and adds a number of technologies that take that very high-end range soaring yet higher.

e Ultima features a 75mm Beryllium tweeter with Poron surround all sitting in a laser-etched black anodised aluminium housing.

e 6.5-inch (165mm) mid-bass driver features Focal’s highly regarded ‘W Sandwich’ diaphragm, ‘Power Flower’ multiple ferrite magnet system, 40mm voice coil with machined aluminium phase plug, all sitting in a non-resonant zamak basket system.

e piece de resistance, the 8-inch subwoofer, features a large highdensity foam roll surround, a dual ferrite magnet system and, again, the famous ‘W Sandwich’ diaphragm construction.

e system has to run fully actively so no crossover is provided with the package. e kit comes presented in a bespoke black satin wooden ight case with two of each driver type neatly presented in foam cut-outs and includes a Focal CD to aid in the system’s set-up and tuning.

No crossover is provided as these drivers need to be driven actively. e two large drivers feature individual engraved serial numbers and the package comes with an authenticity certi cate as being true Focal Ultima products.
