Aussie seniors too strong at Sanctuary Cove
A TRADITION started in 2007 when a twelve-man team of Australian senior golfers hosted New Zealand at The Pines course at Sanctuary Cove. Played in a Ryder Cup format with foursomes, fourballs and individual match play, the result that year was a convincing 19-5 win to the Aussies.
Four years later, with the record now standing at two wins for each country, there was a lot to play for as the two national teams again lined up at The Pines for the 2011 Sanctuary Cove Trophy.
On Day one the all-important opening foursomes went to Australia by a 3½ to 2½ margin. The fourballs followed in the afternoon and the Aussies were again the winners 4 points to 2. With just the12 individual matches to play the visiting Kiwis trailed by three points.
In an exciting final day the New Zealanders started well and with early wins they had drawn level. The Australians fought back to win the vital final games and when the individual matches ended at 6 points each it was an overall result of 13½ to 10½ and victory for the very happy Australian team.
