SYD­NEY’S Hurstville Golf Club is hold­ing its fourth an­nual Hurstville Ju­nior Open on Sunday, Septem­ber 21.

The 18-hole stroke event is a qual­i­fy­ing round for the Jack New­ton Ju­nior Golf Foun­da­tion State Age Cham­pi­onship.

The event, which is open to boys and girls, will be played in five di­vi­sions and of­fers prizes and tro­phies in all cat­e­gories. Div 1–18, 17 and 16 years of age; Div 2–15, 14 and 13 years of age; Div 3 – 12 years and un­der with GA hand­i­cap; Div 4–Girls all ages (de­pend­ing on num­bers play­ers may be in sep­a­rate di­vi­sions. Note: girls are eli­gi­ble for other di­vi­sions.) Div 5–Cadets and un­der 12 years of age with or without an of­fi­cial GA hand­i­cap and aged un­der 12 years as at Septem­ber 25, 2011.

Di­vi­sion 5 will be played over nine holes and is aimed at chil­dren who are new­com­ers to the game. The com­pe­ti­tion wel­comes cadets from other clubs.

The $25 en­try fee in­cludes food and bev­er­age and $ 15 for cadets without an of­fi­cial GA hand­i­cap and un­der-12s. En­tries close on Septem­ber 16. Hurstville Golf Club is a small but grow­ing club with an in­ter­est in grow­ing ju­nior num­bers.

“We started off with five ju­niors and in 2011 we have ap­prox 40 ju­nior mem­bers and 60 cadets in a de­vel­op­ment pro­gram,” said Martin John­son, the club’s ju­nior de­vel­op­ment man­ager.

“In 2009 we were NSW En­cour­age Shield State Cham­pi­ons and in 2010 were awarded the Ju­nior Club of the Year by Jack New­ton Ju­nior Golf.”

John­son said ju­niors can join the club for $75 per an­num.

“We have our own Ju­nior Club com­pe­ti­tion ev­ery two weeks on a Sunday be­tween February and Septem­ber, fol­lowed by a nine-hole prac­tice round each Satur­day.

“Ju­niors can also play in the mem­bers’ com­pe­ti­tions as well.”

He said fe­male ju­nior golfers were more than wel­come to join the club.
