Hurstville Jnr Open
SYDNEY’S Hurstville Golf Club is holding its fourth annual Hurstville Junior Open on Sunday, September 21.
The 18-hole stroke event is a qualifying round for the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation State Age Championship.
The event, which is open to boys and girls, will be played in five divisions and offers prizes and trophies in all categories. Div 1–18, 17 and 16 years of age; Div 2–15, 14 and 13 years of age; Div 3 – 12 years and under with GA handicap; Div 4–Girls all ages (depending on numbers players may be in separate divisions. Note: girls are eligible for other divisions.) Div 5–Cadets and under 12 years of age with or without an official GA handicap and aged under 12 years as at September 25, 2011.
Division 5 will be played over nine holes and is aimed at children who are newcomers to the game. The competition welcomes cadets from other clubs.
The $25 entry fee includes food and beverage and $ 15 for cadets without an official GA handicap and under-12s. Entries close on September 16. Hurstville Golf Club is a small but growing club with an interest in growing junior numbers.
“We started off with five juniors and in 2011 we have approx 40 junior members and 60 cadets in a development program,” said Martin Johnson, the club’s junior development manager.
“In 2009 we were NSW Encourage Shield State Champions and in 2010 were awarded the Junior Club of the Year by Jack Newton Junior Golf.”
Johnson said juniors can join the club for $75 per annum.
“We have our own Junior Club competition every two weeks on a Sunday between February and September, followed by a nine-hole practice round each Saturday.
“Juniors can also play in the members’ competitions as well.”
He said female junior golfers were more than welcome to join the club.
