Melbourne Golf Academy (Open to the Public!)
LOCATED at 385 Centre Dandenong Road in Heatherton ( Adjacent to Capital Golf Club), The Melbourne Golf Academy is one of Melbourne’s premium public practice facilities.
But don’t let the name and location fool you – this gem of a practice facility is 100% open to the public, and features some of the best prices around.
Inside Golf has been to MGA on a number of occasions, and we are continually impressed by the quality and size of the facility. The 350m practice fairway is long enough for the biggest of hitters, while the 10 target greens give players a chance to fine-tune their long and short irons. The undercover, private bays have soft-feel practice mats, club racks, drink holders and more. Plus, the range is floodlit at night, allowing you to keep practising into the later hours.
MGA also features an impressive short game area, where you can practice putting, chipping, pitching and bunker shots.
The instructors at MGA are topnotch, and provide coaching, private lessons and clinics of various sizes. I recently grabbed a quick lesson from MGA’s Vaughan Somers – rated one of the top 50 coaches in Australia. His mastery of identifying a golfer’s “swing personality” proved to be exactly what I needed to begin mending my recent shabbiness off the tee.
Surprisingly, MGA is also one of the most affordable practice facilities in Melbourne. A bucket of 50 balls starts at just $5, which is likely among the lowest prices around. And if you want some instruction, lesson prices are all extremely reasonable (and vary by instructor).
