Cairns GC rewards members
LOYAL members of the Cairns Golf Club in Far North Queensland received a nice post-christmas present from the club.
Club president Paul Chirio said the golf club’s board had agreed to reduce membership fees for 2012 by almost three per cent.
In addition, there would be further discounts if members paid their annual fees early.
Seven-day members who chose to pay their fees early had their fees reduced to $750 – a saving of around 7.5 per cent.
“Our golf club is blessed with members that have been extremely loyal over a long period of time,” Chirio said.
“I don’t think members are recognised enough by golf clubs.
“The trend for golf club membership across Australia seems to be declining and, in our area, we have suffered the problems associated with extreme weather conditions putting pressure on our finances.
“When times are tough, the standard reaction is to ask the members to bear much of the financial pain.
“But when times are good, they don’t actually do the reverse for the members.
“Our members don’t expect that, but we wanted to repay members’ loyalty.
“I think golf clubs everywhere need to start recognising that more.
“I am not sure how often this would happen at any golf club, but it is a new concept for the Cairns Golf Club.
“We are taking a different approach and it will be interesting to see the results at our 2012 annual general meeting.”
The club has also recognised members over the age of 75 who have more than 25 years’ continuous membership.
The club stalwarts will now receive full membership for just $150.
“By us reducing the fees of the older members, I am sure that is going to maintain their connection with the golf club for a lot longer than it would have if we didn’t do that,” Chirio said.
Established in 1923, Cairns Golf Club is located just a few minutes from the CBD.
Chirio said the golf course was in excellent condition and continued to attract positive comments from members and visitors alike.
The picturesque 18- hole championship golf course, which stretches to 6159m for men and 5582m for women, is set among tropical surrounds and spectacular mountain backdrops.
Over the years, the club has hosted several big tournaments including the Cairns Classic, which was a key event on the Von Nida Tour.
