DESIGNER: Jonathan Ben-Tovim Jonathan Ben-Tovim’s Melbourne studio came to life in 2011, but he says that producing his own products was actually an accident. “I have an industrial design background and designed a few pieces for a friend’s bar for fun,” he says. “I had some interest from those, and things just took off from there.” When it came to his made-to-order ‘High’ side table, Jonathan’s inspiration sprung from the range of materials. “I wanted to combine a particular palette: anodised aluminium, Victorian ash timber, glass and brass detailing,” he says. “I think they complement each other really well.” Jonathan’s design process aligns with a desire to make everything locally, and in the case of this table, to be able to flat-pack it for shipping without the finished product looking like a ‘flat-pack’ item. “I’m always keen to produce products locally with quality materials,” he says. “I’m interested in computer-driven fabrication, water jet cutting, CNC [computer numerical control] machining and 3D printing – this allows for local production and higher flexibility to customise designs.” $970,
