Rio On A Roll
The 2016 Rio Paralympics (Sep 8-19) will be its usual source of inspirational material, even if South Africa’s Olympic chief tried his best to put a downer on it by suggesting the Oscar Pistorius could make a comeback for 2020. It’s not quite the Paralympic ideal, but hey, that’s high-level sport. In any case, plenty of good stories in the nation’s Paralympic team: table tennis Olympian Melissa Tapper doubling up, ’08 wheelchair basketballer Dylan Alco returning in wheelchair tennis, legend Kurt Fearnley’s swansong in the marathon. Perhaps the best one is Curtis McGrath, the former soldier who lost both his legs while serving in Afghanistan in 2012. Aer his injury, McGrath vowed to go to the Paralympics – and he did, qualifying in the new sport of paracanoe.
