SURF-O-RAMA

Inside Sport - - INSIDER - – Jeff Centenera ––––

BYMURRAYWALDING, MIEGUNYAHPRESS,

This is an updated edition of the original 2008 book, a comprehensive trove of surf paraphernalia. At its heart are the classic boards dating back to the 1914 visit of Hawaiian surf icon Duke Kahanamoku, and how Australian craftsmen took the form forwards in varied and interesting ways. Mature surfies will surely get a kick out of familiar artefacts of a previous time, but even readers who keep away from the beach can get into the expression of Aussie mid-century style found in the various movies, magazines, souvenirs and other media (the travel posters in particular are exquisite). It’s a reminder of surfing’s inextricable link to the nation’s cultural identity.
