The Super Bowl’s pre-eminence on television is an established phenomenon, regularly topping the US charts of the year’s highest-rating programs. It’s never gone as high as 1982, when it hit a record 49.1 on the Nielsen scale, which equated to 85.24m viewers. A lot of people saw one of the unlucky 13, the Cincinnati Bengals, lose in their first Super Bowl appearance. They would lose their second to the same team, the San Francisco 49ers, seven years later.
