SUNDAY ,25 MARCH
Like anything rugby league-related in Queensland, anticipation is already at feverpitch among the locals for this fixture. According to Toowoomba’s Chronicle, 40 of the 150 corporate seats offered by the Western Mustangs were snapped up almost immediately upon their release.
Named after local philanthropist and former local mayor Clive Berghofer, the venue used to be called the Toowoomba Sports Ground and formerly featured a structure adorned with the sign: E.S. “N---- Brown” Stand, in honour of the fair-skinned, Anglo-Aussie 1920s Kangaroo tourist Edwin Stanley Brown. The ground was redeveloped roughly ten years ago, with Edwin Stanley’s reference never resumed.
This match will come off the back of a Broncos-Titans trial game here, likely being played as you read this just-released issue of Inside Sport. However, our Titans-Dragons round three clash should still attract the biggest NRL-level crowd at the Berghofer since the Broncos played the Storm here in a trial back in ’04, in front of what was estimated to be 10,000 fans.
Having already met his former team, the Broncos, in the NRL season-opener, the Dragons’ star signing Ben Hunt will play his first NRL game in Queensland since switching clubs over the off-season. We’re sure the Queenslanders will have the “Welcome Back Home” mat out for Hunt's return to the Sunshine State.
Match: Titans vs Dragons Location: Clive Berghofer Stadium, Qld Capacity: 9,000 Off the field: Check out Picnic Point during the day, before poking your head into the historic Empire Theatre, which hosts top-quality entertainment all year-round.
