Heartbreak to happiness over lost ring
Golden gesture: IGA returns precious piece of jewellery
DON’T you hate it when you get home from the supermarket and feel as though you’ve forgotten something?
Unfortunately for Buxton woman Lorna Handford, it wasn’t just the milk.
When Mrs Handford arrived home last Thursday after a day of grocery shopping and running errands, she went to take her jewellery off and realised she wasn’t wearing her engagement ring.
Knowing full well she’d left the house wearing the ring that morning, Mrs Handford said she went into “panic mode”.
But with husband of 56 years Trev by her side, the pair headed back into Childers to search for the ring.
“We went to all the shops we had been to and gave them my name and number,” Mrs Handford said.
Feeling heartbroken and helpless after an unsuccessful search, Mrs Handford said she and her husband headed back to Buxton.
Around 4pm, Mrs Handford heard the phone ring and immediately answered.
“It was Christine from IGA,” she said.
Mrs Handford said she was informed a ring had been found in the IGA and was asked to describe her engagement ring.
“I did the best I could of that,” Mrs Handford said.
Determining that the IGA had indeed found her beloved ring, Mrs Handford was preparing to make her third trip into Childers for the day to collect her ring.
“But she (Christine) said, ‘no, I live at Buxton so I’ll be there about a quarter to five’,” Mrs Handford said.
“I couldn’t believe it. It was just so wonderful.”
Mrs Handford said she was delighted to be reunited with her ring.
“I’ve never lost it before, but I knew it was loose and that’s why I hadn’t been wearing it around the house – I only put it on when I went to town,” Mrs Handford said.
“It must have happened when I was taking the groceries out of the basket coming through the till.”
Mrs Handford suffers arthritis in her fingers and said she’d had the engagement ring made bigger, but as her arthritis had settled down of late, the ring had become a loose fit.
Mrs Handford said she couldn’t bear the thought of going without her ring and was now planning an immediate trip to the jewellers to have it resized again.
Buxton woman Lorna Handford I’ve never lost it before, but I knew it was loose. I only put it on when I went to town.
