A NEW $80,000 indoor shooting range in Childers is almost finished and, when opened, will allow the town to host state shooting championships.

Isis District Small Bore Rifle Club president of eight years Larry Dunks said the shed had been a long time coming for the Childers club, which had applied for many grants to fund the facility.

“Seven times we’ve put in grants for this building and on the seventh time we get it,” Mr Dunks said.

He said the new shed would cost about $80,000 and thanks to a successful Sport and Recreation grant, the club would only need to contribute about 20% of the total cost.

But as construction of the shed progressed, he said the costs were adding up.

“As you go along you realise there’s more things you want,” Mr Dunks said.

The facility will open many doors for the Childers club, which was previously limited by its outdoor open range.

“We’ve been shooting out in the open on the main range,” Mr Dunks said.

“We haven’t got any air rifles because we’ve never been able to shoot.”

Mr Dunks said shooters and visitors to the range would feel the benefits of the new range.

“It’s going to be air conditioned and because we haven’t got power, we need to have generators,” he said.

“It’s going to have all LED lighting in it as well.

“We’re just putting on the final touches.”

He said the new facility would be top notch and the only one of its kind in the Wide Bay and surrounding districts.

Mr Dunks said the closest indoor shooting facilities of this quality were in Gladstone or Caboolture.

“Twelve people can stand beside each other while they’re shooting,” Mr Dunks said.

“We can host state championships but we won’t quite be good enough for nationals.”

He hoped the new facility would be used by international competitors who travelled to Australia and looked to keep up practice before taking part in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

STRAIGHT SHOOTER: Larry Dunks, from the Isis District Small Bore Rifle Club, is thrilled with the new $80,000 indoor shooting range that will allow the club to host state titles.
