Ju­nior touch team off to state cup

A LO­CAL un­der-12 touch team is off to Her­vey Bay to­mor­row for the Ju­nior State Cup to be held over three days.

Coached by Patrick Nu­gent, the team of 11 boys from Childers has been train­ing for the past few months to do their district proud.

The Childers group will face a num­ber of teams in its pool and play a to­tal of six games through­out the event.

Team spokes­woman San­dra Scot­ney said the boys were the only team rep­re­sent­ing Childers and were well sup­ported from the lo­cal com­mu­nity.

She thanked lo­cal elec­tri­cians Ja­son and Kayleen Tom­lin­son of EBRICO, who have spon­sored the team by donat­ing new dress shirts, and the touch as­so­ci­a­tion for sup­ply­ing each player with a back­pack, wa­ter bot­tle and cap.

“We wish them all the best, it will be a great ex­pe­ri­ence for them all,” Mrs Scot­ney said.

Mrs Scot­ney said ju­nior touch will start up af­ter the hol­i­days with ju­nior sign-on be­ing held at 5pm and se­niors at 6pm on Mon­day, July 14. Games will start on Mon­day, July 21.
