Council charges unfair

Isis Town and Country - - Opinion -

CONGRATULATIONS to Troy Madle for supporting local businesses in Childers (Isis Town & Country: July 17). As the owners of a commercial property in the main street, we too have been notified that an extra utility charge of $500 a year will be added to our rates. This is because our lessee put in a grease trap in accordance with council’s requirements for a food service facility. A grease trap lessens the burden on council infrastructure yet this was the catalyst for the council’s extra fee. Interestingly, it would appear that those existing businesses without grease traps have not been charged the extra fee, yet they are the ones that contribute the most to the sewer and waste systems. We feel that Bundaberg Regional Council needs to support the local Childers economy and not add to the burden of local business. We do not wish to see the main street once again become the ghost town it was 20 years ago. LYN MARSH AND MICK COLLINS
