Kindy grows up
THE FUTURE of early-learning in Childers has been secured after council approved a 20-year lease of surrounding land to Isis Community Pre-School and Kindergarten.
The existing kindy is currently operating at near-capacity, though the addition of land could double the school’s intake in years to come.
Director Rhonda Campbell was excited about the prospect of a larger kindy.
“We had done a lot of work to get to this point,” Ms Campbell said.
“It means we can provide for more children and helps solve some of our leasing issues which could make it easier to apply for grants.
“We’ve had a lot of help from Rotary to get to this point. (Former president) Garry Walters did a lot of work for us and we’re extremely thankful to them.”
The land was previously split between Department of Education and Bundaberg Regional Council, but it is now solely owned by council.
Cr Tony Ricciardi said the expansion plans were linked to the population boom predicted to hit the BRC region, with estimates at Tuesday night’s Community Information Session about the proposed Planning Scheme reflecting a 30-50,000 increase.
While much of that may be concentrated to the Bundaberg or coastal regions, Childers had to be prepared for growth.
“It’s all part of the future growth that’s been identified for our region,” Cr Ricciardi said.
“This is the only one (in Childers). It was established by Apex about 50 years ago and they’ll be able to expand on that work.”
The kindy’s next step is to design future plans and source funding for the projects.
