HISTORY LESSON: Lily Bauer, John Bauer, Daniel Bauer, Angeline Bauer, Amber Bauer and Gladys Radford (nee Fredriksen) at the Childers State School 125th anniversary celebrations.

EMOTIONS ran high at Childers State School as students, teachers and principals – past and present – celebrated the school’s 125th anniversary.

Visitors arrived on Saturday from across the state for the special day, which also included the launch of a book celebrating the period 1990–2014.

Deputy principal Paul Russo said it was a marvellous occasion that exceeded his expectations.

“I had sleepless nights wondering if we would get enough people to come to the day,” he said.

“We had more than 350 people come, which was fantastic. “We were overjoyed.” Mr Russo said both the current and former sites of the beloved school were open to visitors to walk the hallways and reminisce.

“Staff took people on tours of the classrooms and each classroom had a different thematic setting,” he said.

The official ceremony was attended by Bill Trevor representing Hinkler MP Keith Pitt and Bundaberg Region councillor Tony Ricciardi representing Mayor Mal Forman.

Mr Russo said the most moving moment at the anniversary was when one of the school’s longest-serving teachers, Dorothy Bunn, who taught at the school from 1950–1993, recalled how she had taught three generations of the same family.
